After four months of reports and tweets from different baseball reporters it's finally over, at 2:50PM ET this afternoon, the news broke first by Jon Hayman on twitter (@JonHeyman) that mega superstar, Bryce Harper signs with the Philadelphia Phillies. The deal is for 13-years/$330 million dollars. which becomes the biggest contract in baseball history surpassing Giancarlo Stanton mega contract of 13-years/$325 back in 2013. Bryce Harper has the largest contract in American's Sports Teams History and second highest-paid athletes in the world behind Mexican Boxer, Canelo Alvarez ($365 million).
Jon Heyman and Jeff Passan of ESPN:
This deal includes no opt outs and a full no-trade clause, so Bryce Harper will be most likely spending the rest of his career in the City of Brotherly Love aka Philadelphia. Harper picked the Philadelphia Phillies over the San Francisco Giants who reportedly offered 12-years/$310 and the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly offered 4-years/$180 ($45 million) the highest AAV (Average Annual Value) of the three teams. And would of been the highest of all-time in baseball history. The Phillies were the favorites going into the off-season to land either Manny Machado who signed a 10-year $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres or Bryce Harper. At first we were on Machado and then as the weeks past and the new year came they lend more towards Bryce Harper. John S. Middleton the owner of the Phillies lived up to his word and spent BIG money this off-season and got that mega super-star player, he's the face of baseball NO Question, he's also one of the best players in baseball.
There was noway the Phillies could mss out on Bryce Harper after they declined to match the San Diego Padres offer on Manny Machado and the "Stupid Money" comment by John Middleton at the start of the off-season. They needed to finish this and get Harper to Philly or else the backlash would of been huge in the City of Brotherly Love. It wouldn't of been much love for the front owner, John Middleton and General Manager, Matt Klentak if they didn't get this done and they let a team like the San Francisco Giants outbid them. The fans would of made it very well known by not showing up to the games, like they did last year even when the Phillies were in first place. This franchise needed to have a face of the team and they got it in Bryce Harper.
Bryce Harper's Career Stats:
Bryce Harper's Career Splits at Citizen's Bank Park (Philadelphia):
.268/.365/.564/.929, 14 HRs in 50 Career games (Min. 200 Plate Appearances); All-time leader in Slugging Percentage at Citizen's Bank Park
San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers offers:
Bryce Harper didn't want any opt-out, he wanted to play in one city for the rest of his career and he picked Philadelphia. He wants to recruit other players to come here to play with him and build a brand.
I'm SUPER EXCUITED ABOUT THIS AND I CAN'T NOT WAIT UNTIL OPENING DAY! I can hear it now Dan Baker announcing Harper's first plate appearance in front of the Phillies fans.
Philly Fans rejoiced when the news broke as tickets sales went though the roof.
WELCOME TO PHILLY BRYCE HARPER! THANKS FOR PICKING THE PHILLIES! Thank You Middleton!!
