At about 1pm ET, the news broke on twitter via Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN and Shams Charania of The Athletic that the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves agreed on a blockbuster trade that would send 4-time All-Star, Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton to the 76ers. The Timberwolves, would acquire Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Jerryd Bayless and 2022 second round pick in return. I can't believe we didn't even give up a first round pick that's what is shocking to me but hey Whatever It Takes!
The 76ers are coming off a overtime win last night against the Charlotte Hornets and play the Memphis Grizzlies tonight in Memphis. They'll be short-handed for tonight's game after this blockbuster trade. Jimmy Butler, will likely make his 76er debut against the Orlando Magic in Orlando on Wednesday night.
This is the type of trade that could help 76ers take that next step in the "Process" in winning an NBA championship. Brett Brown said in the Summer that they're going "Star-Hunting" and well they surely did with this trade today. The 76ers got themselves an elite defender, an elite scorer and another "closer", somebody that can take over the game in the fourth quarter, Joel Embiid is the other "closer" they got. Butler, averages 9.0 points in the fourth quarter which is tied for the league lead with Devin Booker, he also shoots 50% from beyond the arc and 49% from the field in the fourth.
Hopefully Jimmy Butler can stay here for the long-term. I don't believe the 76ers do this deal without having confidence that they can re-sign Butler to a long-term deal.
The team-owners, Josh Harris (76ers) and Glen Taylor (T-Wolves), apparently were the ones that got this trade done not the general managers as they talked to each other this morning. The T-Wolves finally said it was time to move on and pulled the trigger on this deal. The longer they waited to trade Butler it wouldn't be good for the team's chemistry in the long-run.
Welcome to Philly Jimmy Butler!!! Reaction Tweets to the trade:
